Cohors II Montanorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cohors II Montanorum [milliaria] ( German  2nd cohort of mountain dwellers [1000 men] ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by an inscription.

Name components

  • Montanorum : the mountain dweller. The soldiers of the cohort were recruited on the territory of the Roman provinces of Raetia and Noricum when the unit was established .
  • milliaria : 1000 men. Depending on whether it was an infantry cohort ( Cohors milliaria peditata ) or a mixed association of infantry and cavalry ( Cohors milliaria equitata ), the nominal strength of the unit was either 800 or 1040 men.

Since there is no evidence of the addition of equitata (partially mounted) to the name , it can be assumed that it was a pure infantry cohort ( Cohors milliaria peditata ). The nominal strength of the unit was therefore 800 men, consisting of 10 Centuries with 80 men each.

history

The unity is evidenced by only a single inscription found in Leptis Magna .

Locations

The locations of the cohort are not known.

Members of the cohort

A commander of the cohort, [...] Caecilia [...] is known from the inscription ( AE 1957, 232 ).
