Numerus Exploratorum Habitancensium

The Numerus Exploratorum Habitancensium ( German  Numerus of the scouts in Habitancum ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is documented by inscriptions. In the literature, the term Exploratores Habitancenses occurs for the unit .

Name components

  • Exploratorum : the scout or scout.
  • Habitancensium : in Habitancum . The addition refers to the Roman auxiliary fort Habitancum .

history

The number was stationed in the province of Britannia Inferior in the 3rd century AD . It is first documented by the inscription (RIB 1235) that was found in the Habitancum fort and that is dated to 213 AD.

  2. According to Marcus Reuter , the Exploratores were probably not local, indigenous scouts, but regular soldiers of the Roman army who were specially deployed for reconnaissance purposes.
