Cohors VI Breucorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cohors VI Breucorum ( German  6th cohort of the Breuker ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by military diplomas , an inscription and brick stamps.

Name components

Since there is no evidence of the additions milliaria (1000 men) and equitata (partially mounted), it can be assumed that it is a pure infantry cohort, a Cohors (quingenaria) peditata . The nominal strength of the unit was 480 men, consisting of 6 Centuries with 80 men each.

history

The first evidence of unity in the province of Germania inferior is based on a military diploma that is dated to AD 98. In the diploma, the cohort is listed as part of the troops (see Roman Armed Forces in Germania ) that were stationed in Germania inferior . Another military diploma, dated 127, proves unity in the same province. In the Germania inferior it is documented as a garrison of the Limes Fort Albaniana .

According to John Spaul , the cohort was not awarded the honorary title pia fidelis Domitiana , with which Domitian (81-96) honored the Roman armed forces in Germania inferior that remained loyal to him after the suppression of the uprising of Lucius Antonius Saturninus . There is currently too little evidence for Paul A. Holder to be able to say whether the unit was in the province at the time and whether it was awarded the honorary title.

Locations

Before the unit was relocated to Germania Inferior , it was probably stationed in Moesia Superior . The locations of the cohort in the two provinces are not known.
