Ala Patrui

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ala Patrui ( German  Ala des Patruus ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by an inscription.

Name components

  • Patrui : of the Patruus. One of the unit's first commanders was believed to be an otherwise unknown Patruus , after whom the Ala was named.

Since there is no reference to the addition of milliaria (1000 men) to the name , the unit was an Ala quingenaria . The nominal strength of the Ala was 480 men, consisting of 16 towers with 30 riders each.

history

The ala may have been established by Caesar , either in Gallia Lugdunensis or in Hispania . She probably took part in the civil war afterwards.
