Georg Zottmayr (born January 24, 1869 in Munich , † December 11, 1941 in Dresden ) was a German opera singer (bass), singing teacher and composer.

Life

Georg Zottmayr was the son of the bass baritone Ludwig Zottmayr (1828–1899) and the Hamburg soprano Euphrosyne Stanko (1831–1890). His uncle Max Zottmayr (1833–1905) was also a singer, albeit a tenor. Georg was trained by his parents.

Zottmayr began his career as a concert singer before turning to opera. His debut was in 1898. He sang one season each in Zittau , Lübeck , Trier , Metz , Regensburg , Basel and Mulhouse . From 1905 to 1910 Zottmayr was seen and heard at the Deutsches Theater in Prague . In 1910 Zottmayr was appointed to the Royal Court Theater Dresden , later the Saxon State Theater. He was a royal Saxon court opera singer and worked as a bassist in various roles until 1924, for example as King Heinrich, Sarastro , Komtur or Prince Gremin . But he was particularly able to shine in his Wagner roles.

Zottmayr also gave numerous guest appearances - in Berlin, Munich, Brussels and on other major stages. In 1913, for example, he performed in Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa solemnis in the Großer Musikvereinssaal Vienna under Bruno Walter, together with Erik Schmedes , Flore Luithlen-Kalbeck and Gertrude Förstel-Links , a student of Selma Nicklass-Kempner . In July 1914 he sang Hermit in Weber's Freischütz alongside Lotte Lehmann at the Sopot Festival in the local forest opera . In October 1920 Zottmayr appeared in the Frauenkirche together with important soloists such as Elisabeth Rethberg , Richard Tauber and others at the Dresden premiere of Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony under Kurt Striegler . Since 1928 he has been a singing teacher at the Dresden Conservatory , the predecessor of the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden , founded in 1856 .

From May 3, 1929 there is an unpublished recording of the Flying Dutchman with Zottmayr, Meta Seinemeyer and Robert Burg at Parlophon , matrix no. 2-21399.
