The Inn in the Vornbacher Enge

The Vornbacher Enge is a breakthrough valley of the Inn not far from the cities of Schärding and Passau . The Lower Inn marks the state border between Germany and Austria. On the Lower Bavarian side of the river, the Vornbacher Enge is a protected landscape area.

geography

Shortly after the confluence of the Rott , the last section of the Inn reaches the Bohemian Massif at Schärding . In the Vornbacher Enge, the river cuts into the southernmost foothills of the Bavarian Forest , which it divides into the Neuburg Forest on the Bavarian side and the Sauwald on the Austrian side.

The Vornbacher Enge begins in the west in the area of the localities of Vornbach on the Bavarian side and Sachsenberg (municipality of Wernstein) on the Upper Austrian river side, and ends in the east in the area of the localities of Neuburg am Inn on the Bavarian side and Wernstein am Inn on the Upper Austrian river side. At the Johannisfelsen, the steep banks come up to 63 meters. The current here used to be very strong, so that the “singing” of the Inn could be clearly heard due to the debris that was driven through. The commissioning of the barrage Passau-Ingling in 1965 the Inn lost 90% of its previous flow rate and since then has been relatively sluggish mass of water. The difference between the highest high tide and the mean low tide fell from 14.29 meters to 8.31 meters. At Vornbach, the Inn level rose by about five meters, causing parts of the bank slopes to disappear into the water. The color of the inner water is whitish, cloudy to brown due to the high levels of suspended matter, on average over 100 g / m³.

Today the Inn cycle path runs alongside the Inn , and the Wels – Passau railway line runs along the Austrian side .

The protected landscape area

Rocks on the bank slope

In 1976, a 1282 hectare landscape protection area was designated here on the Bavarian side of the river. It is called protection of parts of the landscape in the communities of Neuburg a. Inn and Neuhaus a. Inn (LSG Vornbacher Enge) . In addition to the breakthrough valley, it includes the adjacent plateaus of the Neuburg Forest up to the city limits of Passau . In the Inn-Engtal, surrounded by mixed hillside forests, the almost vertically sloping rock walls rise up. Mixed forests with varying proportions of spruce grow on the plateaus of the Neuburg Forest. In between there is grassland with orchards , hedges and woods and the partly traditional appearance of the farms and hamlets .

The flora contains pontic, pre-alpine and dealpine floral elements . The limestone blue-grass occurs on a few slopes that are still open . In addition, the scattered forget-me-not grows there at its only known location in southern Germany. The sticky sage catches the eye with its large yellow flowers , and the nettle-leaved speedwell is also located in Vornbacher Enge. The yellow-bellied toad , black woodpecker , dipper and kingfisher have been found in rare animals .
