Vegetative characteristics

Nettle-leaved speedwell is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 70, but mostly between 30 and 40 centimeters. It is usually only branched at the base and in the area of the inflorescence and is otherwise upright. The stem is hairy short and downy.

The opposite leaves are sessile. At the bottom they are broadly rounded or have a heart-shaped border. At the front they are drawn out into a sharp, triangular point. The leaf margin is sharply serrated. The triangular tip and the edge of the leaf are somewhat reminiscent of the leaves of stinging nettles , this leads to the scientific epithet and their common name .

Generative characteristics

The loose, racemose inflorescences are in the axils of the leaves, the latter becoming smaller and smaller in the uppermost part of the stem, sometimes giving the impression of a terminal inflorescence. The flower stalks are 6 to 8 millimeters long. The hermaphrodite flowers are four-fold with a double flower envelope . The four-lobed crown is pale pink to white and about 5 to 7 millimeters in diameter. The flowering period extends from June to August.

The slightly flattened capsule fruits are apple-shaped, ciliate and almost circular in outline.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18, less often 16.

Occurrence

The nettle-leaved speedwell thrives in the mountains of Central and Southern Europe , specifically in the Alps , in the Massif Central and in the Pyrenees . It is widespread in the Limestone Alps .

The nettle-leaved speedwell grows in mountain forests or in herbaceous meadows in mountains. He prefers calcareous soils . It occurs mainly in societies of the associations of the Fagion, Tilio-Acerion or Adenostylion as well as the sub-associations Lonicero-Fagenion, Galio-Abietenion or Luzulo-Fagenion.
