The Forest Opera was launched on August 11, 1909 with a performance of Conradin Kreutzer's opera Das Nachtlager in Granada . The first Sopot Festival lasted until August 11, 1944, when it closed with a performance of Wagner's Siegfried . Events have taken place almost every year since it opened. From 1922 onwards, Richard Wagner's operas in particular were performed. Well-known conductors such as Max von Schillings , Robert Heger , Erich Kleiber and Franz von Hoesslin led the performances. Because of their quality and uniqueness, the performances soon achieved international recognition. After the Nazis came to power, Sopot developed into one of the most important theaters in the Third Reich and became known as " Bayreuth of the North". An orchestra with 130 musicians and a choir of 500 singers were available for the performances. Visitors also praised the quality of the square, which was perceived as magical.

present

In the 1960s, the opera was completely modernized and rethought.

The opera currently has 4400 seats. There is also a small concert hall (250 seats), a recording studio and a café on the premises. The Sopot Festival , an international music festival , is now held in the Forest Opera every year .
