Erik Schmedes
Erik Anton Julius Schmedes (born August 27, 1868 in Gentofte , Denmark , † March 21, 1931 in Vienna ) was a Danish opera singer ( tenor ). He was best known for his roles in operas by Richard Wagner . His brother Hakon Schmedes was a well-known violinist and composer.
Life
After studying in Paris , Berlin and Vienna debuted Erik Schmedeswurth 1891 in Wiesbaden as a baritone . After further studies with August Iffert , he made his debut in Vienna in 1898 as a hero tenor . (Title role in Siegfried at the Vienna Court Opera ).
Schmedes sang at the Bayreuth Festival from 1899 to 1906 . He was also seen in Wagner operas at the Vienna Court Opera, in 1903 he was seen and heard in the new production of Tristan and Isolde under the direction of Gustav Mahler . He also performed at the New York Metropolitan Opera in the 1908/1909 season . Although he sang primarily roles from the Wagner repertoire, Schmedes was also an admired interpreter of Florestan in Beethoven's Fidelio . During his career he has sung 1,130 performances and 42 roles.
Schmedes had a decisive influence on Viennese opera life for 27 years until, for reasons of health, he left the stage on June 30, 1924 with the title role in Wilhelm Kienzl's Evangelimann .
After that he worked as a teacher at the New Vienna Conservatory until his death , where he sang Siegmund in the first act of Valkyries with his gifted daughter Dagmar, in place of a sick tenorist. Among his students were such prominent singers as Maria Müller and Anny Konetzni .
Erik Schmedeswurth had some time to emphysema suffered and cardiac muscle degeneration when he was in the on 21 June 1931 Heart Station was admitted, where he died the same evening.
In 1936 the Schmedesweg in Vienna- Ottakring was named after him.
