Life

Luca di Tommè was born in Siena around 1330 and was active as a painter from 1355 to 1389. In addition to his work as a painter, he was also active in Senese politics. Here he was a member of the city council (Consiglio maggiore della Repubblica di Siena) in 1373. He probably received his training as a painter in the workshop of the brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti and in that of Niccolò di ser Sozzo (* in Siena ; † approx. 1363 ibid), with whom he also designed and traded works around 1362. Simone Martini also had a further influence on his work . It was first documented in 1356 when he enrolled in the painters ' guild ( Ruolo dei Pittori and Breve dell'arte de' pittori senesi ) of Siena. Around 1357/58 he worked with Cristofano di Stefano on the facade of the Cathedral of Siena . A document from 1362 documents the collaboration with Bartolomeo Bulgarini and Jacopo di Mino del Pellicciaio while working on the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna . Around 1370 he worked in Umbria , where he left the painting Madonna col Bambino e santi in the Chiesa parrocchiale in Forsivo (district of Norcia ) (is now in the Galleria nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia , room 4). In 1374 he worked in Orvieto Cathedral , but returned to Siena in less than a year in August 1375. Here he married Emilia Giacomino (also known as Miglia del fu Giacomino). His artistic activities from 1375 to 1388 are largely unknown, but he appears again in 1389 in the Breve dell'arte de 'pittori senesi . In the same year he designed panels in the cathedral of Siena with Bartolo di Fredi and his son Andrea di Bartolo . Later works are not documented. His place of death is given as Siena, exact dates are not known.
