history

The Porta Senese city gate in Buonconvento

The name Buonconvento comes from the Latin bonus conventus , so the place is of Roman origin, but was first mentioned in a document by Philip II in 1191 . Since 1208 there have been buildings owned by the Senese Hospital Santa Maria della Scala . North of Buonconvento near Serravalle shortly before crossing over the Arbia near Ponte d'Arbia , the Roman-German Emperor Henry VII died on August 24, 1313 after successfully taking the place of a febrile illness after he had traveled to Italy in 1310 to restore imperial authority against his adversary Robert of Anjou . Six years later the place was attacked by Uguccione della Faggiola . Further damage in the place was caused in 1358 by the war of the Senese against Perugia . The bridges over the Ombrone and the Arbia were built in 1360 and 1388 respectively. In 1371 the construction of the city walls began, which was completed in 1383. Two years later the Palazzo Podestarile with the city tower Torre civica was built . Buonconvento rose to be the most important center of the Arbiatal, but politically it belonged to the Republic of Siena, which since 1480 had granted Senese citizenship to the inhabitants. With the fall of the Republic of Siena in 1555, Buonconvento fell to the Medici Grand Duchy of Tuscany four years later .

Buonconvento in literature

The fourth story of the ninth day in Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron begins with the introduction and with the mention of Buonconventos (and Cecco Angiolieri ):

  • Cecco di knife Fortarrigo giuoca a Buonconvento ogni sua cosa ei denari di Cecco di knife Angiulieri, e in camicia correndogli dietro e dicendo che rubato l'avea, il fa pigliare a 'villani ei panni di lui si veste e monta sopra il pallafreno, e lui, venendosene, lascia in camicia.
Cecco di Messer Fortarrigo gambled away everything he had at Buonconvento, and Cecco di Messer Angiulieri's money too. Then he runs after him in his shirt, has him seized by the peasants under the pretext that he has robbed him, puts on his clothes, mounts his horse and hurries away, while Angiulieri remains in his shirt.
