Auchy-au-Bois is a French commune with 1,061 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Béthune-Bruay municipal association , Artois-Lys Romane .

Auchy-au-Bois is 50 kilometers west-south-west of Lille and about 60 kilometers south-east of Calais .

history

The small village on the pilgrimage route of the Via Francigena had little historical significance . The economic boom in the 19th century was short-lived.

Culture and sights

In addition to the Gothic church of Saint-Gilles from 1669, the medieval tower of the Château de Fromentel is of cultural and historical importance.

economy

In the middle of the 19th century, the coal deposits were mined underground. The deposits were exploited from 1852 to 1886. Paleobotanical knowledge could also be gained.
