Isbergues (NDL .: "Isberg") is a French municipality with 8845 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the municipality of Béthune-Bruay, Artois-Lys Romane and is part of the Arrondissement of Béthune and the canton of Aire-sur-la-Lys . The inhabitants are called Isberguois .
geography
Isbergues is located on the Canal d'Aire canal . It is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Venant in the northeast, Guarbecque in the east, Ham-en-Artois in the south, Norrent-Fontes in the southwest, Mazinghem and Lambres in the west and Aire-sur-Lys (Dutch: "Arien aan de Lys ") in the north-west.
history
The name of the place goes back to the daughter of Pippin the Younger , Isberga (Eng. Gisela), who worked miracles in the healing of eye and skin diseases and became a saint.
Today's community was created in 1996 from the merger of the formerly independent communities Isbergues , Berguette and Molinghem .
The villages were first mentioned in the 11th and 12th centuries.
The area gained importance with steel processing from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
