Essars belongs to the arrondissement of Béthune and since 2015 to the canton of Beuvry (before: canton Béthune-Est ). The municipality is a member of the Béthune-Bruay municipal association , Artois-Lys Romane .

Essars is located in the Artois on the Lawe River and the Canal d'Aire à La Bassée . Essars is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Locon in the north, Beuvry in the east, Béthune in the south and Annezin in the west.
