Vermelles lies between the Flanders plain and the mountains of the historic Artois province . Vermelles is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Cuinchy and Violaines in the north, Auchy-les-Mines in the northeast, Haisnes in the east, Loos-en-Gohelle in the southeast, Mazingarbe in the southwest, Noyelles-lès-Vermelles in the west and Cambrin in the northwest.
