history

The name of the first settlement goes back to the Roman Calciata. Before the conquest of England in the 5th century, the Saxon leader Turr occupied the region and the place was named Turringhem (House of the Sons of Turr). As a Gallic place of Celtic tribe , Turringhem kept the name of the conqueror until the end of the Merovingian period in the 8th century. Then it was called Cauchy-à-le-Tour. Cauchy means Chaussée , the military road that leads from Arras , the capital of the Atrebats , to Thérouanne , the city of the Morines .

By feminizing the eponymous Saxon leader, the village received its final name in 1793 with Cauchy-à-la-Tour . Due to the location in the northern French coal mining area , increased industrialization began in the 19th century .

Cauchy-à-la-Tour is the birthplace of Philippe Pétain , Marshal of France . Its marshal's baton adorns the coat of arms.
