Auchel is a French city with 10,291 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It is located in the canton of Auchel in the arrondissement of Béthune and is a member of the Communauté d'agglomération de Béthune-Bruay, Artois-Lys Romane .

The North Sea coast is 60 km away from Auchel both to the west and to the north. The Belgian border runs north-east, 32 km away . The E 15 motorway from Calais to Arras runs north five kilometers away.
history
In 1851 coal deposits were discovered in Auchel, the exploitation of which was associated with a rapid increase in population. In 1950 the city had about 15,000 inhabitants. After the decline in coal production in the 1960s, the population fell again, despite efforts to create economic compensation for the lost jobs in the city.

Attractions
In Auchel there is a mining museum and a carrier pigeon museum founded in 2002, which deals with the hobby of many miners. The Saint-Martin church dates from the 15th century. The town hall is located in a building from the 16th century that was previously the administrative building of a boarding school for girls.
