The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Béthune and the canton of Bruay-la-Buissière (until 2015: canton of Houdain ). The inhabitants are called Maisnilois .

Maisnil-lès-Ruitz is about six kilometers southwest of Béthune . Maisnil-lès-Ruitz is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Ruitz in the north and northeast, Barlin in the east and northeast, Fresnicourt-le-Dolmen in the south and southeast, Rebreuve-Ranchicourt in the south and southwest and Houdain in the west.
