history
The first known name of today's Nœux-les-Mines was Vitris in the 4th century . This settlement was destroyed by the Normans in 882 . In the 10th century, a new village was built on the same site, which was named Noewe . It was in the small province of La Gohelle , which itself was part of the province of Artois . Agriculture was the main activity in the area around the village , but there are also indications that related activities such as milling , sugar- making or brewing beer were carried out.
Due to spelling mistakes, Noewe became Noeux-lez-Béthune in the course of time . After an underground coal deposit was discovered in 1850 and work began on the first coal mine in 1851 - at that time Noeux had around 1,100 inhabitants - the place received its current mining -related name in 1887 . The community has since experienced a strong increase in residents up to 14070 in 1962. The coal mines were closed between 1956 and 1968.
One of the old dumps was converted into an artificial ski slope , which went into operation in 1996.
