The two "black pyramids" called spoil heaps are the highest in Europe

Loos-en-Gohelle is a French municipality with 6751 inhabitants (1 January 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lens , the canton of Wingles and the community association Lens-Liévin .

geography

Loos is in the north of France. The municipality borders directly on the city of Lens on its southeastern edge and, together with this and several surrounding municipalities, forms a closed settlement pattern.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1071. The municipality name has had an addition since 1937, which refers to its surroundings, in order to avoid confusion with Loos in the north department .

During World War I , the Battle of Loos (Battle of Loos) was fought in the vicinity of the municipality from September 25, 1915 to October 14, 1915. The poet Charles Sorley (1895–1915) was fatally hit by a sniper during this battle on October 13 near Hulluch . The Musée Alexandre Villedieu recalls the events of that time.

In Loos, hard coal was mined from 1855 to 1986 . Two spoil heaps still dominate the landscape today. One of the fields in the municipal coat of arms also points to this fact: two miners' ax cross behind a miner's lamp .

On June 30, 2012, the mines in the Nord-Pas de Calais region, including the spoil heaps of Loos, were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .

The mayor Jean-François Caron ( Europe Écologie-Les Verts party ), who has been in office since 2001, managed to turn the former mining town of Loos, which is undergoing structural change, into a beacon for innovations in the region through ecology and citizen participation, for politicians, scientists and journalists attracting from all over the country.
