Bully-les-Mines is a commune with 12,163 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Bully-les-Mines in the Arrondissement of Lens . The place is also part of the Communauté d'agglomération de Lens-Liévin , an agglomeration of 36 municipalities with around 250,000 inhabitants.
geography
Located in the Gohelle countryside , Bully-les-Mines is to the north-west of Lens . The municipality is surrounded by Mazingarbe in the north, Grenay in the northeast, Liévin in the southeast, Aix-Noulette in the south and Sains-en-Gohelle in the west.
history
As a Gallo-Roman settlement, the Pagus Silvinus was part of the settlement area of the Atrebats . From 862 to 1191 Bully belonged to the Counts of Flanders. Bully was destroyed several times. In 1348 a large part of the population succumbed to the plague.
Attractions
The Saint-Maclou church with its bell tower from 1590 has been registered as a Monument historique since 1984 .
Town twinning
Bully-les-Mines has twinned cities with the German city of Elsdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia (1990) and with the Polish city of Wisła in the Silesian Voivodeship (2004).
