Billy-Montigny is a French commune in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lens and the Canton of Harnes . The municipality with 8150 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is part of the Communauté d'agglomération d'Hénin-Carvin .

Billy-Montigny is located in the historic Gohelle landscape . Neighboring municipalities are Fouquières-lès-Lens in the north, Montigny-en-Gohelle in the north-east, Hénin-Beaumont in the east, Rouvroy in the south, Méricourt in the west and south-west and Noyelles-sous-Lens in the north-west.
The former Route nationale 43 runs through the municipality .
history
As the Gallo-Roman oppidum billiacum , the place has been known since the Roman Empire. From the fourth century Normans came here from Scandinavia.
With the discovery of coal deposits from 1720 onwards, mines were driven underground. However, coal mining in Billy-Montigny did not begin until the middle of the 19th century. In the Courrières mining accident in 1906, numerous miners from Billy-Montigny were killed.
