history

Early inhabitants of the area were likely the Etruscans , the Romans and the Lombards . First documents mention the castle Castelnuovo della Pieve di Cascia in 1066 , later called Castelvecchio di Cascia , owned by the Counts Guidi . The place gained importance due to its proximity to Via Cassia Vetus , which led from Florence to Arezzo . Today's main town, Reggello, was built around 1250 as a market square at the intersection of Cassia Vetus and Via del Casentino . With the decree of the Grand Duke of Tuscany , Leopold I , of February 13, 1773, the place was renamed from Cascia to its current name Reggello. Cascia is still part of Reggello today.
