geography

Sesto is located northwest of Florence at the entrance to a plain that is now intensively used for agriculture and industry, the Area vasta . As an extension of this line you come across Prato and Pistoia . The neighboring municipalities are Calenzano , Campi Bisenzio , Fiesole , Florence and Vaglia .

history

The area has been inhabited for 5000 years. Since the 7th century BC. the Etruscans lived here, the tombs of la Montagnola and la Mula attest to this.

The name Sesto Fiorentino comes from Roman times, meaning the sixth mile from the center of Florence ( Sextus ab urbe lapis ) along the main road that eventually leads to Pistoia and Lucca .

The first churches were built in the early Middle Ages, of which the Pieve di San Martino is the most important.

In 1735 Carlo Ginori founded the renowned porcelain factory ( Manifattura di Doccia ), one of the first in Europe.

In the period after the end of the war, Sesto grew strongly and merged with the urban area of Florence. In the district of Osmannoro there is a significant concentration of trade and services, and part of the University of Florence also has its campus here.
