Piero Tosi

Piero Tosi (born April 10, 1927 in Sesto Fiorentino ; † August 10, 2019 in Rome ) was an Italian costume designer who was nominated five times for the Oscar for best costume design and, along with Patricia Norris and Howard Shoup, is one of those who were nominated most often in this category without receiving an Oscar in a competition. At the Oscar ceremony in 2014 he received an honorary Oscar .

Life

After attending school, Tosi studied painting at the Art School in Florence with Ottone Rosai . He began working as a costume designer for the film Bellissima in 1951 and subsequently created costumes for almost 50 films during his career.

In 1960 he won the first time the Nastro d'Argento of Italian Film Journalists Association ( Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani (SNGCI)) for Best Costume Design (Migliori Costumi) in Tolpatsch makes a career of Mario Soldati (1959). He later received the Nastro d'Argento in 1962 for Das Haus in der Via Roma (1961), in 1963 for Senilità (1962) and in 1964 for The Leopard (1963). For the costumes in The Leopard , he was also nominated for the first time for the Oscar for the best costume design in a color film at the 1964 Academy Awards. Vera Marzot acted as his assistant .

For Death in Venice (1971) Tosi was not only nominated for the best costume design at the 1972 Academy Awards, but also won the Nastro d'Argento and, for the first time, the British Film Prize ( Best Costumes ) for the 1972 costumes .

In 1974 he was nominated again for the Oscar in the costume design category for Ludwig II (1973) and again received the Nastro d'Argento for the costumes in Malizia (1973). At the 1980 Academy Awards , another nomination for best costume design followed with Ambra Danon for A Cage Full of Fools (1978). In 1981 he won the David di Donatello Best Costume Designer (Migliore Costumista) for The Lady of the Camellias (1981).

Another success was La Traviata by Franco Zeffirelli (1982). For this he received on the one hand again the Nastro d'Argento and his second BAFTA Award and on the other hand was nominated for the fifth and last time at the Academy Awards 1983 for the best costume design. For Zeffirelli's Spatz (Storia di una Capinera, 1993) he received not only the David-di-Donatello of the best costume designer, but also his last Nastro d'Argento.

Most recently, he has received numerous awards for lifetime achievement: 2003 with the President's Award (President's Award) of the Guild of costume designer ( Costume Designers Guild (CDG)) and 2006 year 50 with the price on the anniversary of the David di Donatello. In 2014 he received the honorary Oscar for his life's work.

Other films for which Tosi created the costumes were Rocco and his brothers (1960) and The keys to the house (Le chiavi di casa, 2004). In the course of his work he worked with well-known film directors such as Gianni Amelio , Mario Soldati , Mauro Bolognini , Luchino Visconti , Salvatore Samperi , Franco Zeffirelli and Édouard Molinaro .

For several years he was a lecturer at the National Film School (Scuola Nazionale di Cinema) of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome .
