action

Gianni's friend Julia died 15 years ago giving birth to their son Paolo. He was born mentally and physically disabled, but Gianni even refused to see him. Paolo grew up with Julia's sister Livia and her husband Alberto. Now the boy has to travel from Italy to Berlin for treatment . Since the attending doctor thinks that the presence of the father might give the boy's health a boost, Alberto asked Gianni to accompany Paolo to Berlin for three days. Gianni, who is married and has a son a few months old, agrees. He met Paolo for the first time on the train to Berlin. Paolo is open to him and meets him with interest. He knows that Gianni is his father. He, in turn, has fear of contact with Paolo, whom he initially faces overprotective and supports while walking, even if Paolo refuses his help several times.

In the hospital, Paolo's blood is drawn and Gianni flees the treatment room. In the corridor he meets the much older Nicole, who has a severely disabled daughter who is also being treated in the hospital. He lies to Nicole that he is not Paolo's father. Later he goes out to eat with Paolo and later carries the sleeping boy back to the hotel. The next morning brings the first difficulties. Paolo no longer feels like being in the hotel and wants to go home. He later accuses Gianni of not giving him his medicine the night before. Gianni is also clumsy when dressing Paolo. In the hospital, Paolo, who has to stay overnight due to epileptic seizures and is being wired, throws Gianni out of the treatment room. Gianni meets Nicole again in front of the hospital. He now indirectly admits that he is Paolo's father. She makes it clear to him that she saw this connection. At the same time, however, he appeared to be ashamed of Paolo. The next morning Gianni is present when Paolo is doing running training and is being filmed by the doctors. When Gianni has the impression that Paolo is at the end of his strength, he interrupts the training and thus draws the anger of the doctor. Nicole later makes it clear to him that the greatest challenge for doctors is not the children's illness, but the wrong behavior of the parents.

Paolo has had a pen pal for some time: Kristine lives in Norway and has sent him a photo of herself. With Gianni's help, Paolo writes her an email. A little later he and Gianni go to a meeting place where wheelchair users play basketball. Nicole is also there with her daughter, who shows pictures she painted herself at the event. Gianni left Paolo on the sidelines and instructed him not to leave the place. Nevertheless, Paolo moves away from the hall and gets into a Berlin subway, where he can hardly make himself understood. Only later does Gianni notice that Paolo is missing. The police finally picks up Paolo, who is picked up by Gianni and Nicole. He is not aware of any wrongdoing. After Paolo is in the hotel and is sleeping, Gianni and Nicole talk. He admires her composure, but she admits that she sometimes wonders why her daughter doesn't just die.

Paolo's treatment in Berlin is over. Instead of going home, Gianni sets off with him to Norway, where they want to visit Kristine. On the ferry crossing, Gianni throws Paolo's walking aid overboard because, in his opinion, he no longer needs it. There is no one to be found at Kristine's school as it is Sunday. Paolo and Gianni decide to come back the next day. They both eagerly finish part of the cake that was meant for Kristine. In the hotel Gianni Paolo offers to stay with him and his family in the future. He is already making plans for the future and Paolo is also imagining what he could teach Gianni's son. The next day they both drive around in their car. Gianni allows Paolo to carefully take hold of the steering wheel. Paolo, however, repeatedly intervenes actively in the steering process and blows the car horn. When he persists in what he is doing despite repeated requests, Gianni suddenly stops the car. He asks Paolo why he is doing this. Paolo does not say and finally begins to mechanically say sentences that he has already said earlier: where he lives, what his telephone number is, that Gianni should write down the number. He gets out of the car in awe. Paolo walks slowly to him. When Gianni bursts into tears, Paolo reassures him that one shouldn't cry.
