Company history

1949

Truma was founded in 1949 by Philipp Kreis, who initially ran an English language school in Munich after his return from the Second World War . The unreliable power supply in the post-war period with constant power cuts posed a major problem for evening school. Philipp Kreis used the gas pipes that worked in the school building and developed gas lights that lit the language school brightly even when the power was cut. The school quickly turned into a company for the production of gas lights. Philipp Kreis named his company Truma in reference to the then US President Harry S. Truman , whom he adored for his efforts to rebuild Germany.

1955 to 1982

In 1955, Truma brought the first quick-acting shut-off valve to the market, with which gas lines could be shut off quickly. The gas lights were very well received in camping and caravanning, and Philipp Kreis decided to enter this market with additional products. In 1961 the Truma-matic came onto the market, the first officially recognized caravan heater that worked independently of the power grid on the basis of liquid gas. In 1969 Truma introduced the Duomatic gas pressure regulator. In 1972 Truma set up its own service organization in order to be able to look after customers directly on the campsite or at home. In 1975 the electronically controlled Trumatic E heater was introduced, which could also be installed in motorhomes, boats and trucks . In 1976, Truma enabled hot water to be supplied in caravans and motorhomes with the Truma Therme. The development of a gas boiler with a capacity of up to 14 liters made it possible to shower in the caravan five years later.

1983 to 2003

In 1983, production, technology and administration were brought together in new buildings at the production site in Putzbrunn. In 1988, Philipp Kreis withdrew from day-to-day business and handed over management to his daughter, Renate Schimmer-Wottrich. In 1994, Truma developed the Trumatic C heater, which offered heating and hot water from a single device. It was immediately adopted in series by many motorhome manufacturers. In 1997 the subsidiary Truma UK was founded for sales and service in the United Kingdom . In 1999, Truma introduced a maneuvering system for caravans and air conditioning systems for motorhomes and motorhomes.

2004 to 2010

In 2004 Truma opened a new service center, which housed customer service and a service workshop. A year later, the technology and innovation center was built with two cold and climatic chambers, in which devices and vehicles can also be tested by specialist journalists under practical conditions. Truma Italia S.rl was founded in 2007 and a representative office was set up in China in 2008 . In the same year, Truma added products from Calira , a supplier of devices for power supply as well as control and display panels for leisure vehicles, to its range. In the same year Renate Schimmer-Wottrich left the management and took over the chairmanship of the newly established company advisory board. In 2010, the company founded the Truma Scandinavia sales office and launched a gas pressure control system with an integrated crash sensor. In addition, this year Truma presented the AquaStar system and water cleaning agent.

2011 to 2014

In 2011, the company owner founded the Truma Foundation Renate Schimmer-Wottrich, which supports projects in the field of child, youth and family aid. In the same year, Truma entered the roof-top air conditioning segment for leisure vehicles with the Aventa comfort . In 2012, Truma celebrated 50 years of caravan heating with two new S-heater models . In the same year Truma brought a fuel cell onto the market. The VeGA generates electricity from liquefied gas and enables a network-independent energy supply . The constant development of new technologies was honored in 2013, 2015 and 2017 when Truma received the "Top 100" award as one of the most innovative medium-sized companies in Germany. Also in 2013 the company discontinued the business operations of Truma Electronic Systems (formerly Calira) in Kaufbeuren and withdrew the power supply products from the range. AquaStar has also not been available since 2013. A year later, Truma also stopped production of the VeGA fuel cell because no significant quantities were achieved. In the course of internationalization, Truma founded two subsidiaries in the USA and China. Truma brought out the AquaGo for the North American market. The instantaneous water heater produces endless warm water at a constant temperature at the push of a button.

2015 until today

With the Truma iNet System, the company laid the foundation for digital networking in leisure vehicles in 2015: It enables Truma heating and air conditioning to be controlled via an app on a smartphone or tablet. In the same year, Alexander Wottrich, who had previously gained experience at Hilti as a development engineer and technical project manager, joined the company as managing director of the Truma Group and is now the third generation to run the family business. Renate Schimmer-Wottrich supports her son as deputy managing director in his duties and continues to be the chairwoman of the advisory board. Alexander Wottrich also took over the position of technical director on January 1, 2018 and is thus responsible for research & development and supply chain management. In the same year, Truma received the Top Job Seal, making it one of the best employers among German medium-sized companies.

Products

As a manufacturer of comfort products for leisure vehicles, Truma manufactures heating systems, air conditioning systems and hot water systems. Truma also offers products for gas supply and energy management in motorhomes and caravans. In the field of maneuvering systems for caravans, Truma is on the market with the radio-controlled mover. The Truma iNet System digitally networks iNet-compatible devices such as heating and air conditioning and enables the devices to be controlled using an app while on the move.
