Howard Shoup

Howard Shoup (born August 29, 1903 ; † May 29, 1987 ) was an American costume designer who was nominated five times for the Oscar for best costume design and is one of those most frequently featured in, along with Patricia Norris and Piero Tosi were nominated in this category without receiving an Oscar .

Life

Shoup began working as a costume designer for the film Her Husband's Secretary in 1937 and has helped set up over 160 films in his 30-year career.

At the Academy Awards in 1960 , he was nominated for the first time for the Oscar for best costume design for the black and white film The Man from Philadelphia (1959). Further Oscar nominations in the category of best costume design for black and white films followed in 1961 for JD, the Killer , 1962 for Claudelle and her lovers (1961), 1965 for Prince Consort in the White House (1964) and most recently at the 1966 Academy Awards for Nymphomania (1965).

Other well-known films to which he contributed the costumes were A House in Heaven (1943), Professor Bondi's Cabinet (1953), Frankie and his cronies (Ocean's Eleven, 1960) and The Unyielding (1967).

During his career he worked with film directors such as Vincent Sherman , Budd Boetticher , Gordon Douglas , Curtis Bernhardt , Walter Grauman , André De Toth , Lewis Milestone , Stuart Rosenberg and Vincente Minnelli .
