Pietro Bernini (born May 6, 1562 in Sesto Fiorentino , † August 29, 1629 in Rome ) was an Italian sculptor , painter and restorer .

Life

He was the father of Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini and Luigi Bernini and was trained in Florence by the sculptor Ridolfo Sirigatti . It is not known who trained him in painting, but according to ancient traditions, around 1580 , together with Antonio Tempesta , he worked on the frescoes in the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola .

In the following years he stayed in Rome , where he restored ancient statues, among other things. It is believed that he also received orders for Pope Gregory XIII. carried out. Around 1584 he moved to Naples , where he made numerous sculptures for various churches. In 1594 he stayed again in Florence, where he worked with Giovanni Caccini on a relief of the Holy Trinity . In 1596 he worked again in Naples. At the turn of the century he entered into a workshop partnership with Michelangelo Naccherino , with whom he created the Neptune Fountain in Naples, among other things. Against 1605/06 he moved to Rome, where he worked in the service of Pope Paul V came. From 1617 he worked more and more often with his son Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini .

Pietro Bernini is considered an extremely capable artist, but whose oeuvre hardly has any inventions of his own. Influenced by the most varied of styles and schools, it does not offer a uniform picture.
