Fontana della Barcaccia

The Fontana della Barcaccia (German Barkassen -Brunnen ) is a baroque fountain in Rome . It is located on the Piazza di Spagna in front of the Spanish Steps .

history

The Fontana della Barcaccia was built in the years 1627 (or 1628) to 1629 by Pietro Bernini , father of Gian Lorenzo Bernini , at the request of Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini), taking bees, a heraldic symbol of the pontiff's family, and the tiara at the outer ends of the boat were incorporated into the design. Collaborators were the sculptor Battista Bancozzi and possibly also Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The name Barcaccia is derived from the shape of a semi-sloping launch. The fountain was supposed to commemorate a flood disaster in 1598, during which the square was flooded and a boat is said to be stranded here. Travertine was used as the material .

The fountain is supplied with drinking water by Aqua Virgo . Because of the weak water pressure at the time of construction, it was created slightly below street level.

The fountain was thoroughly restored and cleaned in 1986 and from autumn 2013 to September 2014 at a price of 209,960 euros.

On February 19, 2015, the fountain was badly damaged by hooligans from Feyenoord Rotterdam in a riot in the run-up to the Europa League game against AS Roma . Some damage was described by the monument authority as irreversible.
