Einstein case

The so-called "Einstein Case" occurred on August 3, 1944 when soldiers murdered three women from Albert Einstein's family . Robert Einstein was a stateless Jew who was born in Munich in 1884 . He was the son of Jakob Einstein, Albert Einstein's younger brother. Robert Einstein was a successful businessman who had lived in Italy since 1937 . He was married to Cesarina (Nina) Mazetti, the daughter of a Protestant pastor . The couple had two daughters (18 and 27 years old). The family lived on the Villa Il Focardo estate near Rignano sull'Arno.

As the front line approached the estate, Einstein hid in the area with Italian partisans in the hope that his non-Jewish family, including two adopted nieces, would be spared from attacks and that liberation was imminent. On the morning of August 3, 1944, soldiers broke into the house, vandalized and locked the women and children in a room on the upper floor. A short court martial was held and Robert Einstein's family was shot in a room on the first floor. The two nieces survive locked in a shed because they did not have the Einstein name. The soldiers then set fire to the house.

Robert Einstein saw the flames and returned from the forest to the villa. He found his wife and two daughters murdered and immediately tried a suicide , which failed. The incoming Allied troops move Einstein to a quick investigation into the murderers. There are indications of the conviction on the basis of espionage and of belonging to Judaism . In 1945, Robert Einstein committed suicide on the 32nd wedding anniversary.

In 2007 one of the surviving nieces will bring proceedings for this murder. A perpetrator could not be determined, but according to witnesses there was one among the soldiers who spoke out against the murder. But this person could not be identified either.

In 2011, the case with reference number XY ... was presented unsolved . The motive is unknown. The world-famous name of Albert Einstein is considered a likely trigger.

The crime has not yet been solved.
