San Godenzo came into being with the foundation of the Benedictine abbey around 1028. In the late Middle Ages the territory belonged to the Counts Guidi and came under the rule of Florence in 1344 (San Godenzo and San Bavello) and 1366 (Castagno).

After the Italian unification in 1861, the place grew from approx. 3400 inhabitants to approx. 4100 (1911). Thereafter, the population fell continuously until 1991, when about 1100 inhabitants were counted.

The main town of San Godenzo was on the Gothic line and was almost completely destroyed by German troops when they withdrew in 1944.
