history

Probably the first inhabitants of the area were Ligurians , after which the Etruscans settled under Lucumone di Fiesole. After their decline, the Romans took over . The Pieve San Pietro above the municipality was mentioned as existing in a document by Otto II as early as 983 . In 1115 the place was mentioned as a castle (Castello) in a document from the monastery of San Salvatore a Settimo . From the 14th century, the place was under Florence. From 1551 the place belonged to Scarperia . Under the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold I , the place came to life in the second half of the 18th century, especially through the Regia Postale Bolognese from Florence to Bologna that was now being built . Vaglia experienced a further boom through the Florence – Faenza railway line , which was completed in 1893 and has a stop in Vaglia. During the Second World War , the place was almost completely destroyed and later rebuilt. The destroyed railway line was not reopened until 1999.
