Pontassieve is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Florence in Tuscany with 20,601 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

The city is located around 15 km east of the provincial and regional capital Florence at the confluence of the Arno and Sieve rivers and is part of the Comunità montana Montagna Fiorentina.

The districts include Acone, Colognole, Doccia, Fornello, Lefallen, Le Sieci, Lubaco, Madonna del Sasso, Molino del Piano, Montebonello, Monteloro, Monterifrassine, Petroio, Podere Prato, San Martino, San Martino a Quona and Santa Brigida.

The neighboring municipalities are Bagno a Ripoli , Borgo San Lorenzo , Dicomano , Fiesole , Pelago , Rignano sull'Arno , Rufina and Vicchio .

history

The name means bridge over the Sieve. This bridge connected Florence with the Sieve Valley and used to be of strategic importance. It was protected by the Castello di San Michele Arcangelo, which also forms the old town center. Three of the old gates have been preserved.

Attractions

The bridge over the Sieve was built in 1555. It rests on stone pillars, the arches are made of bricks.
The clock tower, part of the 14th century fortification.
The Palazzo Sansoni Trombetta, today the town hall, was built in the 17th and 19th centuries. Century. One room is decorated with frescoes by Ferdinando Folchi depicting famous heroines.
The Parco Fluviale (river park) named after Fabrizio De André also serves as a place for events such as concerts and open-air cinema.
