Tifariti ( Arabic تيفاريتي) is a city in Western Sahara and has been the de facto capital of the Sahara Democratic Arab Republic since 2011 . The city is located in the northeast of the area, east of the Moroccan Wall , about 140 kilometers from Smara and 15 kilometers north of the border with Mauritania . Unlike the de jure capital El Aaiún , Tifariti is located in the free zone of the Polisario Front . Tifariti is a little oasis in the hammada . In the vicinity of Tifariti there is an important archaeological site of the Neolithic.

history

North of Tifariti is a place called Rekeiz. There are many Precambrian rocks and caves there. The caves are home to hundreds of cave paintings known as "the Sahara Neolithic".

Tifariti was founded in 1960 as a barracks for the Spanish army. Tifariti has a university .
