Muaskar ( Arabic معسكر, DMG Muʿaskar , tamazight ⵎⵄⴻⵙⴽⴻⵔ Mɛesker ; former name Mascara ) is a city in Algeria in the province of the same name on the Hobra River. The city has 108,587 inhabitants (2008 census).

history

The oldest fossils of the genus Homo discovered in North Africa to date have been recovered 20 kilometers east of Muaskar . They come from a sand pit near Tighénif (formerly: Ternifine), where they were excavated between 1954 and 1956. There are three lower jaws (archive number Tighénif 1 to 3) and several individual teeth that are attributed to Homo erectus and were initially called Atlanthropus mauritanicus .

In the 19th century, Muaskar was the capital of Algeria under Abd el-Kader . From 1848 until Algeria became independent in 1962, Mascara was the capital of the arrondissement of the same name in the Oran department . On August 18, 1994, Muaskar was hit by an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale. 171 residents were killed.
