    history

The Polisario was founded in May 1973 by a group led by al-Wali Mustafa Sayyid and Brahim Ghali . At the same time , the armed struggle for independence , known as the Western Sahara conflict, began against the Spanish Sahara colony that existed until 1975 . This was continued against Mauritania and Morocco , which occupied the Western Sahara after the Spanish withdrawal.

From 1976 to 2016, Mohamed Abdelaziz was Secretary General of the Polisario. From 1982 to 2016 he was also President of the Sahara Democratic Arab Republic (DARS).

After a peace treaty with Mauritania in 1979, the conflict with Morocco continued until the beginning of the ceasefire agreement in 1991.

On February 24, 1985, fighters from the Polisario shot down a research aircraft belonging to the Alfred Wegener Institute on its way back from Antarctica. When the POLAR 3 was shot down , the pilot Herbert Hampel, the copilot Richard Möbius and the mechanic Josef Schmid were killed.

There they live in refugee camps, the population of which was up to 155,000 in the last 30 years (as of 2006).

The provisional headquarters of the Polisario government of the Sahara Democratic Arab Republic is in Tindūf.

Since July 9, 2016, Brahim Ghali has been Secretary General of the Polisario and President of DARS.
