Saguia el Hamra ( Arabic الساقية الحمراء as-Saqiya al-hamra ' , DMG as-Sāqiya al-ḥamrāʾ'  the red river bed '), together with Río de Oro, represents one of the two areas that make up the former Spanish province (until 1969: colony) Western Sahara ( Sahara Occidental ) duration. It makes up the northern part from latitude 26 ° to 27 ° 50 'north, which has an area of ​​about 82,000 km².

Its name goes back to Saguia el Hamra , a wadi that damms into a lake during the rainy season near the capital El Aaiún without reaching the Atlantic Ocean, which is 25 kilometers away.
