Bir Lehlu is a small place in the northeast of the Western Sahara and east of the sand walls built by Morocco , ie within the parts designated as "liberated areas" by the Polisario independence movement .

Bir Lehlu is 475 meters high. Until 2011, the place was regarded as the "provisional capital" of the State Democratic Arab Republic of Sahara (DARS), which was proclaimed by the Polisario , as long as the capital El Aaiún , as defined in the DARS constitution, remains under Moroccan control. In 2011 the government moved to Tifariti . It is also the place from which El-Uali Mustafa Sayyid read the declaration of independence in a radio broadcast on February 27, 1976 following a corresponding resolution by the Provisional Saharawi National Council, Consejo Provisional Nacional Saharaui . The short and medium wave transmitters of the Voz del Sáhara , the national broadcaster of the Democratic Arab Republic of the Sahara, are also located here . According to some sources, Bir Lehlu is also the birthplace of today's national hero El-Uali , but there is little evidence of this.

The name "Bir Lehlu" is a transcription of the word in the regional dialect Hassania of Arabic and means "beautiful spring". In standard Arabic the city would be calledالبئر الحلو, DMG al-biʾr al-ḥulw .
