Nouméa Agreement

The Nouméa Agreement was an agreement between the French government and representatives of various political parties in New Caledonia that stipulated the transfer of certain powers to New Caledonia. Defense, security, justice and financial policy (currency) are excluded.

Referendum on the Nouméa Agreement

The agreement was signed on May 5, 1998. In a subsequent referendum in New Caledonia on November 8, 1998 , it was approved with 72% approval.

Independence referendum

A referendum on independence or remaining with France should take place between 2014 and 2018, according to the Nouméa regulations. It was carried out on November 4, 2018.
