history
The first traces of settlement in the area date from the Bronze Age . Among other things, ceramics have been found from this period . The area was then settled by the Etruscans , who also devoted themselves to the manufacture of ceramics.
Capraia Fiorentina
In the Middle Ages, Capraia was of particular importance due to its location on the hill that dominates the Arno valley. The place was under the control of the Alberti di Mangona family until it got caught up in the conflicts between Florence and Pistoia . At the beginning of the 13th century, the Florentines built the castle of Montelupo on the opposite side of the Arno to stop the expansion of the Pistoians. After the defeat of the Pistoier a short time later, the disputes between the Ghibellines and Guelphs reached the place . After unsuccessful peace negotiations and betrayal, the Guelphs from Florence, who had fled to the castle of Capraia, found themselves exposed to an attack by the Ghibellines, who then took the castle and captured the leaders of the Guelfs. In 1250 the Guelphs returned to the place. The name Capraia can be traced back to the name Cerbaria (from Cervi: deer or Capra: goat). Under this place name the place was already by Otto III. mentioned in documents sent to the Bishop of Pistoia.
Limit sull'Arno
The place is much younger than Capraia and was first mentioned in 940 in documents of the Counts Guidi , who also resided in Pistoia. In the 14th century the place was given to Florence by Pistoia. The name Limite comes from its location on the border of the two areas of Pistoia and Florence. Due to its direct location on the Arno, the place became important for inland shipping and the population grew steadily, so that the municipal administration passed from Capraia to Limite in 1874.
