Guinea Bissau Armed Forces

The armed forces of Guinea-Bissau ( Portuguese Forças Armadas Revolucionárias do Povo ) consist of the three armed forces army , air force and navy and have a total of 9,250 men.

Due to the limited financial resources that the country can raise for its military (in 2003 the defense budget was only around US $ 3 million), the armed forces are in a very poor condition. It is planned to reduce the armed forces to 2,000 to 2,500 men and to use them more for internal security tasks. There are quite a few entanglements with drug trafficking .

army

The army comprises around 6,800 soldiers, making it by far the largest armed force in the country. In terms of heavy equipment, on paper it has ten Russian T-34 tanks from the time of the Second World War , which, however, due to their old age and the poor supply situation, are probably no longer operational and, moreover, hopelessly outdated.

Air force

The air force consists of around 2,100 soldiers, who have five MiG-21MF fighters , a two-seat MiG-21UM training machine , six helicopters ( Gazelle , Mil Mi-8 ) and transport machines ( Antonov An-14 and An-24 ). Here, too, the desperate financial situation is likely to significantly limit the willingness to work.

marine

A small navy with 350 men and three lightly armed speedboats protects the coast of the country.
