Mairie Santoche

Santoche is a village and a former commune with last 87 inhabitants (at January 1, 2014) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

With effect from January 1, 2017, the former municipalities of Clerval and Santoche were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Pays de Clerval . The former municipalities were not granted the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are located in Clerval.

geography

Santoche is located at 286  m , one kilometer north of Clerval and about 24 kilometers southwest of the city of Montbéliard (beeline). The village extends in the lowlands of the Doubstal north of the river, at the northern foot of the Jura border chain (Côte d'Armont).

The area of the former municipality area of 2.15 km² comprised a section of the Doubstal. The southern and eastern border ran along the Doubs, which flows here with several turns through a nearly one kilometer wide flat valley and at the same time forms the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . From the course of the river, the community area stretched northwest over the floodplain to the adjacent high terrace , which consists of ice-age river deposits. Further to the northwest, the terrain rose to the plateau of the Grand Bois . Here, at 385 m, Santoche's highest point was reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Santoche were Fontaine-lès-Clerval and Pompierre-sur-Doubs in the north and Clerval in the east, south and west.

history

Various finds and the dolmen bear witness to a prehistoric settlement in the municipality of Santoche. During Roman times, the traffic route from Vesontio (Besançon) to the Upper Rhine led through today's village. In the Middle Ages, Santoche belonged to the Clerval dominion, which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) in the 14th century . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

Saint-Ermenfroi Chapel

The chapel Saint-Ermenfroin Santoche was built in 1671 and has a statue of Saint-Ermenfroi, the village patron, from the 15th century. The Dolmen de la Pierre aux Gaulois was built around 3000 BC. On the banks of the Doubs is the so-called Motte de Jules César, probably a Gallic temple complex. It consists of a square hill surrounded by a system of ditches.

After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 25 and 42 people, a continuous population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Santoche was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today the most important employer in the village is a company belonging to the Streit group, which produces mechanical accessories for the automotive industry and employs around 150 people. So Santoche has significantly fewer inhabitants than jobs.

Although the village is away from the larger thoroughfares, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from Clerval on the main road N83 (Besançon-Montbéliard). The closest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around 12 km away. There are other road links with Soye and Pompierre-sur-Doubs. The nearest train station on the Besançon-Mulhouse railway line is in Clerval, around 1 km from the town center.
