Ardengo Soffici
Ardengo Soffici (born April 7, 1879 in Rignano sull'Arno , † August 19, 1964 in Vittoria Apuana di Forte dei Marmi ) was an Italian art critic, illustrator and painter of Futurism .
Life
Soffici began to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence in 1897 , then switched to the Scuola libera del nudo and finally ended up in Paris, where he was able to establish himself as an art critic and illustrator in 1904. There he came into contact with Pablo Picasso , Georges Braque , Max Jacob , Guillaume Apollinaire and Gino Severini . In 1907 he returned temporarily to Florence , where he became friends with Giovanni Papini , for whose newspaper Leonardo he wrote articles. From 1908 he also worked for the new literary magazine La Voce , in which numerous of his essays on French painting and literature appeared. In Paris, influenced by Cubism, Soffici developed into a sharp critic of Futurism. As in La Voce 1911 a devastating critique of the Milan exhibition Futurism appeared, it came to the punitive expedition of Marinetti , Boccioni and Carrà to Florence, but the parties to the dispute reconciled in the course and worked together. In 1913, Soffici and Papini founded Lacerba, a less elitist art magazine that soon became the most important mouthpiece for the Italian futurists. Soffici now regularly took part in the exhibitions of the Futurists, but his pictures remained closely linked to Cubism . With articles like Cubismo e oltre and Cubismo e futurismo , he tried to build a bridge between these two art movements.
With Marinetti's turn to politics, which began in 1914, the alienation arose, which found its expression in the critical article Futurismo e Marinettismo , in which in 1915, alongside Soffici, Papini and Palazzeschi also campaigned against the Milanese futurists in Lacerba . Marinetti was mainly accused of watering down the artistic standards of Futurism through the generous acceptance of new members. This ended Soffici's turn to futurism, which was ultimately devoted to representational painting.
