Alfredo Martini (born February 18, 1921 in Calenzano , † August 25, 2014 in Sesto Fiorentino ) was an Italian racing cyclist and cycling coach, including national coach. He was successful as a professional cyclist in the 1950s.

Career

Martini was a professional cyclist from 1941 to 1957 and achieved victory at the Giro dell'Appennino in 1947, the Piedmont Tour in 1950 and third places at the Giro d'Italia in 1950 behind Hugo Koblet and Gino Bartali and in the Tour de Suisse in 1951 behind Ferdy Kübler and Hugo Koblet some successes.

As Italy's national coach between 1975 and 1997, he led Francesco Moser at the 1977 World Cup , Giuseppe Saronni at the 1982 World Cup , Moreno Argentin at the 1986 World Cup , Maurizio Fondriest at the 1988 World Cup and Gianni Bugno at the 1991 and 1992 World Cup to their world championship titles.

Private life

Martini lived in Sesto Fiorentino , was married and had two daughters with his wife. Since March 2014 he was an honorary citizen of his birthplace Calenzano. Martini died on August 25, 2014 in his home town at the age of 93 and was buried there two days later in the presence of many of the drivers he coached.
