UCI Road World Championships 1977

The 1977 UCI Road World Championships took place from August 22nd to 26th in San Cristóbal , Venezuela . This was the second time that road world championships were held in South America after 1968 ( Montevideo ) .

For the professionals, 89 riders were at the start in San Cristóbal, which is around 1000 meters high, of which only 33 made it to the finish. The cycling described it as "one of the worst World Cup race ever": The course included a long, difficult pitch that had to deal with 15 times, constantly were added changing weather conditions, of crackling rain over a stiff wind to high heat. On the penultimate lap, the German Dietrich Thurau pulled away from a larger breakaway group of 14 drivers, but was caught by the Italian Francesco Moser , who ultimately won. The other six West German drivers, including Gregor Braun and Klaus-Peter Thaler , had to gradually give up. The multiple Belgian world champion Eddy Merckx crossed the finish line second to last, ahead of the French cycling star Raymond Poulidor .

The team time trial took place in La Fria , 80 kilometers away . The location, which is around 800 meters high, had a tropical, humid climate that made many drivers difficult. The victorious team of the USSR had taken precautions by setting up their quarters in La Fria three weeks beforehand. The West German team came in 14th out of 15, followed only by Mexico. The reasons given for the disappointing performance were the early retirement of Friedrich von Loeffelholz and a penalty time of 2:15 minutes for riding behind the wheel with the Polish team.
