Mieczysław Paweł Nowicki (born January 26, 1951 in Piątek ) is a former Polish cyclist .

biography

Athletic career

In 1967 Mieczysław Nowicki began cycling under the renowned Polish trainer Teofil Sałyga. 1972 started at the Olympic Games in Munich in two competitions on the track : In the single pursuit he was 14th and together with Bernard Kręczyński , Janusz Kierzkowski and Paweł Kaczorowski ranked fourth in the team pursuit. In the same year he won a stage of the Vuelta a Cuba and then switched primarily to road cycling , but occasionally still drove track races. On the track he became Polish champion in the single pursuit in 1970 and 1972. He won the title in the team pursuit in 1970 and 1974.

After he was able to achieve stage victories in tours in 1973, he became amateur world champion in 1975 with Tadeusz Mytnik , Ryszard Jan Szurkowski and Stanisław Szozda in the team time trial . He also decided the Tour of Scotland for himself.

Nowicki competed three times in the International Peace Tour : in 1973 he was tenth overall, in 1975 he was 55th, and in 1976 he was eighth. In 1973 he set a Polish hour record with 42.231 kilometers, which was only improved in 2014 by Andrzej Bartkiewicz with 47.618 kilometers.

At the 1976 Olympic Games , Mieczysław Nowicki won two medals: silver in the team time trial (again with Mytnik, Szurkowski and Szozda) and bronze as an individual starter in the road race. Also in 1976 he won the Rhineland-Palatinate Tour and a stage of the domestic race Dookoła Mazowsza . In 1977 Nowicki again achieved success in the team time trial at world championships when he won the bronze medal with the Polish team in San Cristóbal, Venezuela (Mytnik, Szozda and Czesław Lang ). In 1978 he won a stage of the Tour of Austria , after which he ended his cycling career. At the UCI Road World Championships from 1969 to 1973 he was four times among the top ten drivers in individual races .

Professional

Mieczysław Nowicki graduated from the Mechanical and Technical University in Łódź in 1969 . After the end of his sports career, he ran a carpet factory from 1981 to 1995. From 1995 he was the sporting director of the International Peace Tour , held other positions in sport and in the social field and was President of the Office for Physical Culture and Sport . From 2000 to 2001 he was Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of National Education. In 2001 he ran for the Polish Senate , but was not elected. He has been working in the Łódź City Hall since 2003. Nowicki has received several awards in Poland for his services.
