1952 UCI Road World Championships
The 1952 UCI Road World Championships took place in Luxembourg on August 23rd and 24th .
Racing action
For the first time in the history of the professional road world championships, there was a German winner in the 27-year-old Heinz Müller from the Bauer racing team . 48 professional drivers had tackled the 280-kilometer-long undemanding race track, a 16-kilometer circuit. There were attempts to break away on the 17 laps, but in the 13th lap the peloton was reunited and headed for the goal as one. The until then little known Müller was able to show his speed in the sprint. In terms of tire strength, he relegated the Swiss Gottfried Weilenmann to second place. Müller achieved an average speed of 39.45 km / h. Team colleague Ludwig Hörmann completed the German success in third place. This was followed by a group of 31 more drivers at the same time, 19 of whom were placed 11th together with the German Werner Holhoffer . The fourth German Valentin Petry finished in 30th place. Heinrich Schwarzer and Peter Schulte were eliminated after the ninth lap. With them, a further eight drivers had given up the race prematurely.
The day before, 113 amateur drivers from 23 countries had determined their new world champion over 175 kilometers. The 22-year-old Italian Luciano Ciancola won with an hourly average of 40.048 km / h and a wafer-thin lead . The Dutchman Piet van den Brekel came in second, but was later disqualified because of an unauthorized wheel change. German drivers played no role in the race. While the GDR had not sent any participants, of the six West German drivers only Horst Tüller and Franz Reitz crossed the finish line with the main field, Maue was eliminated early.
