UCI Road World Championships 1947

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1947 UCI Road World Championships took place on August 2nd and 3rd, 1947 in Reims ( France ).

Racing action

On a circuit of 7.8 kilometers, the professional drivers covered 274 kilometers with 35 laps. In the scorching heat, the route offered no shade, so that of the 31 participants who started only seven reached the finish. The defending champion Hans Knecht and the current winner of the Giro d'Italia , Fausto Coppi, were among those who left . After the Dutchman Sjef Janssen had been in the lead for a long time , he was overtaken by a four-man chasing field on the last lap. With a long sprint, 33-year-old Dutchman Theofiel Middelkamp secured the world championship title with an hourly average of 36.7 kilometers.

The amateurs drove 164 kilometers. There was an Italian double victory: the 23-year-old Alfo Ferrari won in a sprint out of a top group of five in front of his compatriot Silvio Pedroni .

As in 1946, there were no German drivers at the start for either the professionals or the amateurs, as there was no national association at that time.
