UCI Road World Championships 1976
The UCI Road World Championships 1976 were held in the September 4 and 5 Italian Ostuni instead.
In the Olympic Games of Montreal World Championships roads that race were only held the two non-Olympic competitions among professionals and women. For the amateurs , the Olympic cycling races were also classified as the amateur world championships.
The race in Ostuni was carried out on a 36-kilometer circuit, it was hot and a strong wind was blowing from the Adriatic Sea .
44 women were at the start for the women, not including German women athletes. Over half had to pay tribute to the heat and give up before the finish line. It was won by Keetie van Oosten-Hage from the Netherlands , who then announced her retirement from active competitive cycling. For eleven years she was among the best in the world and won 15 world championship medals. In this alone World Cup in Italy, she took two gold medals, in the road race and the individual pursuit on the track .
Seven German drivers started in the professional race, with Willi Singer from Augsburg as 30th. Dietrich Thurau crashed twice and reached the finish in 47th, almost three minutes behind. The Belgian Freddy Maertens became world champion .
In Montréal, the Olympic champion Bernt Johansson ( Sweden , individual road race) and the Soviet Union (team time trial) were both amateur world champions.
